Mutant Spider Identified!

Apr 15, 2012 by

The spiky mutant spider of doom from yesterday has been identified!  He is a selenops, a spider genus with over 115 different species. He’s often called the giant crab spider. But there are actual giant crab spiders too, so.. we’ll stick with selenops!

Enjoy this lovely video of a selenops pouncing on a spider. It’s fast and happens right at the beginning.

As taken from Pensoft, selenops “…are exceptional in that both their running and striking speeds place them amongst the world’s fastest animals (Crews et al. 2008).”  There’s a creepy thought.

Special thanks to J&J Balaban for their help in identifying my furred visitor.
